IT industry in Wroclaw: success, growth and transformation. Report

95% of IT companies in Wrocław have ambitious development plans and 84% want to expand their teams. However, the biggest challenge for employers is to attract experienced and highly specialised experts. Such conclusions can be drawn from the report prepared jointly by the Wroclaw Agglomeration Development Agency and the ITCorner cluster of innovative companies.

The publication is the result of complex research in which 120 companies from the IT sector took part.

In a special questionnaire the representatives of the companies described, among other things, for which clients they work, which employees they are looking for and what their plans are for the future.

Additionally, 15 heads of companies gave in-depth interviews. They talked about the most important projects and cooperation with the city or the universities.

According to the report, global corporations have a huge influence on the development of the IT market in Wrocław, while companies from the SME sector focus on development in innovative technological areas (e.g. artificial intelligence).

The whole IT sector in Wrocław employs around 36 thousand people, and more than half of companies employ specialists with complex competences. This means that they combine IT knowledge with mathematics, economics or even natural sciences.

Most clients of Wrocław IT companies are those from abroad. 41% of them come from Europe and 25% from other parts of the world. 34 %of the clients are Polish companies. Who do technology companies in Wrocław work for? Most often for the financial sector and IT – as subcontractors.

– The other sectors indicated in the survey, i.e. production, commerce and transport and logistics, are also welcomed. These are attractive sectors, currently undergoing digital transformation and adopting innovative solutions, such as AI, Big Data or IoT – points out Grzegorz Rudno-Rudziński, member of the board of the ITCorner cluster, managing partner in Unity Group. – Concentration of solutions provided for these industries in Wrocław is consistent with the direction of European Union’s innovation policy related to the development of Industry 4.0. It will enable companies to gain additional funds for investments and construction of transformation hubs in this area – adds Rudno-Rudziński.
