Smabbler wins European Startup Challenge

28.03.2022

Smabbler - a Wroclaw-based startup has won the European Startup Challenge. The company successfully applies artificial intelligence to text analysis.

European Startup Challenge is a competition organized by Vestbee – a platform that connects startups with investors. Young companies from all over Europe that are at an early stage of development (usually employing up to 30 people) take part in the competition. What is important is that Vestbee reaches out to many startups, so the competition in this contest is very high.

– The jury of the competition includes the best funds from our region. Therefore, winning the European Startup Challenge is a success for us – we have been awarded by people who know how to look for very promising companies at a very early stage of development. For us it is above all motivation for further work and confirmation that we are developing in the right direction – says Lukasz Pytel, CEO of Smabbler.

Smabbler: AI engine for text interpretation

Smabbler is a technology company from Wroclaw developing artificial intelligence to work with text data. When asked what they do, representatives of the startup say: – We live in times when we are flooded with an excess of information. Often there is too much information for us to easily find what we need. Our mission is to facilitate access to knowledge.

– Imagine an expert that we can train in any field and who understands every language in the world. Smabbler is such an expert who can read any textual data e.g. documents, conversation records, information sources and convert such data into specialized, coherent knowledge labels. Example: we have five huge cookbooks on the history of Italian cuisine. We want to quickly find all the varieties of Italian ham and how these varieties differ from each other. Smabbler finds and displays a short, precise summary for such a question in a few seconds – says Agnieszka Kopytko, CTO of Smabbler.

Agnieszka Kopytko and Lukasz Pytel started working on Smabbler in 2014. Initially, they did not plan to deal with artificial intelligence for “reading”. The first idea for the startup was to connect companies, potential contractors, based on information from company websites.

It quickly became clear that artificial intelligence for “reading” had many limitations. Smabbler’s founders saw this as an opportunity and set about just developing an artificial intelligence that could read and interpret text data. Soon after the work began, Przemyslaw Bierut, the third founder, joined the team.

The first five years worked on the technology – algorithms for natural language processing. Only in 2019 Smabbler presented the capabilities of the developed technology. It was then that they began to implement the first orders for customers. Currently, Smabbler offers their solution to large, international corporations. Over time, they plan to open up to smaller companies as well.

Currently, the company works with very large, foreign corporations. During the last year, the team has grown from 5 to 12 people, and this year the number will probably double again.
