The computer game market in Poland is developing at a rapid pace, and Polish games are winning the hearts of players around the world. There are 55 GameDev studios in Wroclaw, which puts the city in 3rd place in terms of the number (right after Warsaw and Krakow).

Which of the latest games are being developed in Wroclaw? There are several interesting premieres ahead.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human – a production on an international scale

This game has been hailed by many reviewers as the best Polish production of recent years. The survival-horror from Wroclaw-based Techland takes us to a post-apocalyptic world affected by a terrifying pandemic.

In the city of Villedor – the last refuge of humans, you will come to fight for life with mutated creatures, seek allies and make unobvious choices. The game is brutal (intended for players 18 and older), but truly breathtaking.

See for yourself, by the way.

Dying Light 2 is also a true superproduction. Its budget was about $100 million and reportedly paid for itself in the first month of sales. For comparison: the first season of Netflix’s The Witcher series, cost $80 million, and the most expensive Polish film – Quo Vadis – cost 76 million, but PLN.

We will also have to pay a little for this pleasure. The game in its basic version costs on the Steam platform 200 PLN without a single penny.

Broken Ranks – a dark RPG with tactical elements.

Those who have ever played Fallout or Baldur’s Gate will feel familiar here at first glance. Broken Ranks may not look spectacular, but it is a piece of enjoyable and solid gameplay. Here we have both a plot and full-blooded dialogues, and completely crisp graphics on a 3D engine.

An interesting solution is turn-based combat, somewhat resembling the mechanics of Heroes of Might and Magic. This makes us get gameplay with tactical elements instead of simple woodcutting.

The game is free to play. And although we can make micropayments in it (e.g. to change our avatar, skin or nickname), the producers from Whitemoon Games assure us that premium options do not strongly affect gameplay and there is no “pay to win”. Check it here.

Terminal Protocol – become a hacker in cyberspace

Terminal Protocol

After a big game and a smaller one, it’s time to introduce the smallest one. The release of Terminal Protocol -debiutant game of the studio No Rush Games, was announced for the third quarter of 2022. Here we will have the opportunity to take on the role of a lone hacker, who, directing his viruses, plays out digital battles in cyberspace. He fights against powerful corporations, improves his programs and uncovers secrets from the past.

The game’s graphics and sound will appeal to a retro atmosphere. They are based on visions of cyberspace from the 1980s and synthwave music. The combat system is to be turn-based, inspired by the XCOM series.

Terminal Protocol is set to debut on the Steam platform.

I, the Inquisitor – a game based on the novel by Jacek Piekara.

Mordimer Madderdin – the humble servant of the Holy Office – is approaching us with an unhurried step. The adventures of the inquisitor-detective from the novel by Jacek Piekara, will be transferred into the world of games by the Wroclaw-based studio The Dust. The game’s release was until recently announced for the end of 2022.

On August 3, The Dust announced an agreement with Kalypso Media Group. The Wroclaw-based studio will receive €1.55 million from the German publisher to complete the game, and Kalypso will become its exclusive distributor. They plan a simultaneous release on all platforms in the second half of 2023.

So far, The Dust has been sparingly giving us information about the new game. What is known is that the writer himself was to be involved in its development. – This bodes well, as Jack Piekara’s character-building, dialogue and plotting skills could make “I, the Inquisitor” a truly engaging entertainment.

That’s not all from Wroclaw

Critical Hit Games: a first-person narrative game in an alternate future

One of the projects shrouded in a haze of mystery, Critical Hit Games studio is working on.

“I can only reveal that we are working on – in our opinion – potentially the most impressive and visually spectacular first-person narrative game. The stylistics of the game refers to the climate of neo-noir, and the story is set in an alternative vision of the future. The project is being taken care of by a major European publisher. The game is being developed using Unreal Engine technology and is scheduled for release on all leading hardware platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S.”

Game Island: survival game Serum

In late July 2022, Wrocław-based Game Island released the first trailer for survival game Serum. It is, for now, the only title the studio reports about on its website. This probably means a definite farewell to the project of the post-apocalyptic game The Day After. Serum’s release date is not yet known.

Techland: a brand new fantasy game

The launch of a new project in May was also announced by Techland. It is to be a fantasy epic set in a vast open world. It is known that it is to be a AAA game – that is, a high-budget one.

Knowing Techland’s track record and capabilities, there is certainly something to look forward to. For now, the studio has shared the first graphics with fans:
